Sælukot: Well located bungalow

Description

A cozy cottage by Medalfellsvatn lake, a hidden gem in the south-western corner of Iceland cradled by majestic mountains, evoking a calm and quiet feeling during the stay. The cottage is very well situated for those that intend to explore what Iceland has to offer - a perfect starting point for both east and west-bound day trips.
The cottage is approximately 40 km from Reykjavik, and a short drive to Thingvellir National Park, Kerid and Thorufoss. Gullfoss and Geysir (Golden Circle) is about 100 km away. Furthermore, Snæfellsnes peninsula with all its beauty is a mere 150 km away.

The cottage is 48m2 with two bedrooms and a bathroom with a shower. In the one bedroom, there is a 140 cm (full size) bed, with a single size bunk above. The other bedroom has a 160 cm (queen size) bed. There is a common room or living space with a sofa that doubles as a bed (160 cm/queen size), kitchen table and chairs and a fully functional kitchen. There is also a gas grill on the wrap-around porch. The cottage has electric water heating.

Within walking distance is Kaffi Kjos, a small farm store where one can buy most necessities as well as food (Opening hours differentiate between seasons). The Wine school by the Lake, a wine tasting experience with breathtaking views, is a couple cottages down. A couple minute walk away is Gallery Nanna selling handmade leather designs.
It is possible to fish in Medalfellsvatn lake (you need to purchase the fishing card).
The farms Sogn and Háls are a short drive away, where they sell farm-to-table produce.
Lastly, the area has plenty of walking trails where you can enjoy the Icelandic nature in peace.

Hvalfjörður is also a part of the local area. There, among other things, you can find Laxá í Kjós, Glymur waterfall, the tallest waterfall in the country, (it is about 30 min. walk up to the waterfall) and Hvammsvík, where you can experience one of the amazing nature baths in the country and enjoy meals at Stormur Bistro & bar.
There is also a Militarymuseum and a swimming pool at Hlöður. It is nice to visit the Bjarteyjarsandur farm, which keeps animals and sells various products from the local area.

Akranes is a small town, there can you find various services, as well as the beautiful sandy beach of Langisandur, where the naturebath Guðlaug is located. It is about 30 min. drive away if you go through the Hvalfjörður Tunnel. You can also take a longer, more scenic drive around Hvalfjörður and enjoy the beauty that the fjord has to offer.

There is a beautiful golf course at Brautarholt and the surroundings of the course and the view are pure adventure.
Laxnes Horse Farm is also about a 30-minute drive from the cottage, where you can rent an Icelandic horse and go for a horseback ride.

Be aware that if it has been snowing heavily, you will need a car with a four-wheel drive to get to the cottage.
