Description

The cabins at Þakgil are only open during the summertime. Each cabin has sleeping-bag accommodation for 4 guests with two double bunk beds. Kitchen with a gas stove and refridgerator. W.C but only cold water on tab. There is a shower with warm water, at the campsite, next to the cabins.

Þakgil is located between Höfðabrekkuafrétti and Mýrdalssandur. The name Þakgil, þak meaning roof and gil meaning canyon, and as the name suggests the weather is usually very good. To get there you turn up from road nr.1 by Höfðabrekka (5 km east of Vík). The road up to the camping site used to be a part of hightway nr. 1 until 1955. Just follow that road and you will find a sign that ponts at Þakgil.

On site, there are a lot of bautiful hiking routes fit for everyone. Camping site, bathrooms and shower are available. The dining room is a naturally formed cave, and in it there is a grill and a fireplace

I would definitely come back here again. A beautiful area with it's own hiking trails. A lot to explore within the area. Staying here for a few days is definitely recommended. I stayed in the cottage which was very warm. Should bring your own lighter stick for the kitchen in the cottage. The toilets were clean and the hot shower was perfect. There is also an area to wash your clothes. It is a very beautiful and secluded area. Internet is limited here.

Beautiful landscape and cute little cottage with a toilett and a small kitchen.

The toilett wasn't really clean and I think that the cleaness of the cottage totally depends on who slept there before and how exactly they cleaned it.

It's good if you bring your own kitchen equipment especially when you are more than one person because we had only two uncompleted set.

The arrival is exciting and the street a little bit tricky but it gets easier any time you have to use it.

Only 4 stars because of the cleaning of the hut.

Amazing place, wonderful scenery, great Hut, nice reception. However the road place is very long and stony. We would recommend it only with a good car, off-road and ar good westher. There should be a warning and information about this very special Road.

Very simple bungalows on a beautiful camping place on the end of a valley after a bumpy ride off 3 quarters. In the bungalow a nice toilet simpel kitchen en 2 persons bunk to sleep. We don?t like the fact we use the showers off the toilet block off the camping, they are certainly not clean.

Stayed in one of the chalets. Very comfortable. Chalet clean and stove worked well. Staff very friendly and helpful.
Communal showers were busy but adequate.
Beautifully situated campsite. I would recommend it.

Heel mooie locatie! Een heel mooie route ernaartoe: 30 minuten te rijden vanaf Vic met 4x4 . Huisje was netjes, alles aanwezig.

Amazing location, in the middle of nowhere !
The bungalows are simple and limited in terms of equipment, but it is enough to have a great time in the area.
We had a slight issue when trying to find the key of our bungalow at check-in time, but it was quickly fixed.

A realy wonderful place with great opportunities for hiking. The accomodation was big enough for 4 people, and everything worked (fridge, stove, heating).
Unfortunateley the cutterly was not complete and the matresses were quite old and uncomfortable. Recording to the price the huts should be checked a little more carefully.

Die Hütte ist natürlich eher schlicht. Es gibt kein Warmwasser. Das Etagedoppelbett ist elativ schmal für zwei Erwachsene. Bettwäsche gibt es nicht, nicht einmal Decken oder Kissen. Aber wir hatten ja Schlafsäcke dabei. Duschen kann man im waschhaus des Campingplatzes.

Der Weg zur Hütte ist abenteuerlich. 14 km Schotterpiste, teilweise recht eng und steil mit sehr unübersichtlichen Kuppen. Aber das war schon ein Erlebnis!

und die Lage der Hütte ist traumhaft. Am Ende eines tief eingeschnittenen Tals, in einem Kessel mit grünen Bergen rundherum. Ein kleiner Bach der vor der Hütte entlang plätschert. Ich habe es genossen, auf der Terrasse zu sitzen und das geschäftige Treiben auf dem Campingplatz inmitten dieser schönen Landschaft zu beobachten.

We enjoy our stay there. The road to come is a nice trip and this camp in the middle of mountain is very nice. We have been well welcoming. We recommand it.

What a fantastic location. Basic cabin (no bedding included, but for rent for an extra fee) but enough for our family of four (kids 6 & 9 years old). Great (!) hiking trails. The road to Thakgil is amazing, an adventure on it's own. It's not an f-road, but drive with caution if you come with an 2wd (as we did :-)). Would definitely recommend for adventurous people who want to get away from the crowds and experience this amazing scenery.

Way too far from the village. 40min car ride to get to the cabins and the road is unpaved. The cabins are beautiful! But there are no pillows. The shower is outside.

Expérience exceptionnelle à Thakgil, juste la route pour y parvenir vaut le coup d'y séjourner, un autre monde ! Nous avons séjourné en cottage très bien équipé, et le responsable du site nous a dépannés dès qu'il le pouvait. Si nous avons la chance de revenir en Islande, sans aucun doute nous prévoierons un nouveau séjour afin de profiter des randonnées alentours.

The property it was gorgeous. The cabins were comfortable and had more than we expected including heat and dishes. The hiking was amazing!

We spent one night in an idyllic setting. But what a sublime place, and then what landscape all along the road.
I would recommend this place and if I were to return to Iceland I think I would return, not to mention the person present there to greet us. Great welcome and great service.

Wonderful cottage in a remote hill. The road up to the campsite is definitely a part of the Iceland experience ??Satisfied with most of the things. Worth paying a visit. The view amazed us.

We stayed in Þakgil only one night, it was raining heavily but the landscape is amazing anyway. The cabins are small but very clean and well kept, as the whole camping area.

Wonderful place among the mountains! To get there you have to drive for about 15 km on a gravel road (not always easy with a city car). The cabins are nice, but there is no warm water and despite the heating system it was quite cold.

The location of this camp is awesome! You can even do some hiking departing from the camp. It is really beautiful to see. You will need a sleeping bag, warm enough as it is a big cold inside. Also, there is only one shower for all the camp, which imply sometimes a long queue to take a shower. But as I said, the landscape here is amazing!

A really beautiful place, seems to be a part of paradise. Long away from noise, rush and "mass tourism". Very comfortable chalet.

Very nice place in unspoiled nature. the only bad thing is a difficult road to arrive if your car is not 4x4, but when you arrive forget the road. it is worth but drive slowly.
