Description

Arguably some of the best-situated cottages on Snæfellness peninsula are for rent in Hellnar (2 hours driving from Reykjavik).
You can rent the cottage Þórabúð (49 m2). There is a unique 360-degree view on the sea and the glacier and the terrain goes all the way down to the coastline.
The cottage holds three bedrooms (three double beds and one single bunker above), a kitchen, a living room, a bathroom and a big outside terrace with furniture and barbecue (gas). There is a high chair for babies and a small playground outside.
NEW high-speed INTERNET for free!!!

-> Cleaning fee and rental of bedsheets+towels is obligatory for 15.000 ISK--- Minimum 2 nights booking is available ----

Þórabúð is located next to two other separate cottages (approx 200-300 m between). They are all placed remotely on the private property in Hellnar and have a view to the ocean and to the beautiful and mysterious glacier, Snæfellsjökull.
It is really a peaceful and not windy place where the sunset is long and beautiful.
Next to the cottages is the famous "Maríulind" source it is believed to give a healing effect to those who drink the water. There is a beautiful trekking path through the lava between Hellnar and Arnarstapi (3 km walking), which provides ample opportunity for bird and whale watching.
Nearby are several hiking paths, beaches, horse riding, swimming pool, bird and seal watching, cafes and restaurants, golf and organized sightseeing and snowmobile on Snæfellsjökull and caving tours.
There is 1 cafe called Fjoruhusid and a Restaurant at Fosshotel Hellnar so you don't have to spend your time cooking.

Driving directions to the cottage:
In Hellnar, you will have to follow the road towards the harbour to reach the cottage. This is marked as the access road on the Hellnar map.

GPS coordinates
If you have a GPS unit, you can use the following coordinates:

Þórabúð 64.75613, -23.6517

Experience Iceland's spectacular nature at Snæfellness peninsula.
Often referred to as the center of the Earth, this area boasts breath
taking geological formations and coastal lines, the setting chosen in
Jules Vernes "Journey to the center of the Earth?.

After you make a booking, I will send you all the information needed for your stay.

What to see around Hellnar:

Here are my favourites things to see when we are there:

Lava from Hellnar to Arnarstapi:
There is a beautiful trail that you can walk in the lava between Hellnar to Arnarstapi. It's about 3 km walk along the coastline.
Really worth seeing nature and the birdlife. You can have a break in one of the café?s in Arnarstapi before heading back to Hellnar. The café ?Fjöruhúsið? by the harbour in Hellnar where the walking trail starts is much nicer though with a spectacular view on the porch.

Londrangar:
These are insane rock formations to see. There is also a lighthouse you can walk to.
You can park at Svalþúfa / Þúfubjarg parking lot and follow the walking trail.

Djupalonssandur:
A beautiful black beach made of rounded stones.

Kirkjufell:
One of the most photographed mountains in Iceland. You can walk around the mountain. I have only walked around the waterfall which is beautiful and taken pictures of the mountain.

Malarrif:
A small museum of the national park and toilets.
Nice nature, fun swing on a long string and also black beach made of rounded stones.

Saxhóll crater:
Saxholl is a crater which is easy to climb since they have created a long staircase. There is a great view over the area from the top.

Swimming pool in Ólafsvik and Lýsuhól

The swimming pool in Olafsvik is quite nice with several outside jacuzzis (also for kids) with a splendid view of the mountain. All swimming pools in Iceland are nice so you should definitely try that.

The swimming pool in Lysuhol is a natural water spring without Chlorine.
This swimming pool is never washed so it grows all kinds of water plants. I do not recommend this for people who want everything clean.

Snæfellsjokull:
Drive-up the glacier to walk on the snow and see the beautiful view.
Gowest offers hiking tours on the glacier. It can be dangerous to walk to the top alone. Check out: www.gowest.is

You can also drive on snow scooters or with a big snow truck on the glacier. Check out: www.theglacier.is

Svöðufoss:
Waterfall between Rif and Ólafsvík. You will see a huge sign by the road. There is a big parking lot and you can actually walk by the left side of the waterfall and up to the top.

Fishing in the sea, whale-watching or bird watching around Grundarfjordur.

Horse riding www.storikambur.is

Cave sightseeing.
If you want to explore the cave Vatnshellir, you can book a tour here www.vatnshellir.is
Have a lot of clothes (gloves and hats since it is freezing gold down there!).

Wonderful cottage! I took my family and we really enjoyed our stay. The accommodation was lovely. We had all we needed. We stayed two nights and could have certainly stayed two more. The surrounding location is beautiful. There is so much to do and so many wonderful sights. Definitely explore the national park if you go and enjoy this beautiful part of the country. Thank you so much! We will certainly sharing this spot with our friends and hope to come back.

Fantastic views to the see and the mountains. Very good situated for visiting the glacier and all the touristic sites in the 'Snaefells' peninsula. The owner sent you in advance very detail instructions for the house and very useful hints for driving and visiting the area, with information about supermarkets and restaurants. A confortable house with all you need for a fantastic stay. Only one recommendation for improvement, a set of small spoons for coffee would had been very useful.

This was a perfect little ?get away? cabin in a stunning location! Quiet and private and great as a base to explore the National Park and peninsula. It is simple and compact, but has all that you require, and the gas bbq was brilliant for cooking relaxed suppers. The very sweet cafe at Hellnar harbour is a must for a drink (10 mins walk from cabin) and there is a nice walk along the lovely coastline from the cabin to the next village. We are a family of four (kids 12 & 14) and there is plenty to do when you are not relaxing soaking up the lovely stillness and views. Whale watching, hiking and pony riding (just 3 of us and a guide along a private beach) We really enjoyed our stay!

Thorubud is a lovely, comfortable cottage with a fantastic view of the sea on one side, and the snow-capped mountains on the other. The beds were comfortable and the kitchen well-stocked. There is an excellent internet connection, and we appreciated the clothesline! The dining/kitchen area is a bit cramped, but there is seating outside. Please note that while the location is beautiful, it is difficult to find good-quality groceries nearby. As the owners suggested, you will want to get all of you groceries in one go in Borgarnes.

A really wonderful place, overlooking the sea in front of us and watching the glacier behind us, always looking, majestic in sunshine and full of mystery in wandering clouds... A place to enjoy and to experience the whole peninsula. This was our second time to spend a week on Snæfellsness peninsula.

We had a wonderful stay at the Thorubud Cottage. The cottage was clean and very well stocked when we arrived. We had the entire property to ourselves as no one was staying in the other 2 cottages. We loved walking around on the rocks and moss, plus walking into Hellnar and Arnarstapi. The location was perfect. The beds were all comfortable and everything in the cottage was in good working order. We would love to stay in this property again if we return to Iceland.

Response from Christine Blin
Thanks for your nice review.
You are welcome to come back. If you come in August, you can pick blueberries in the lava above the cottage.
Cheers,
Christine

We visited this cottage in July 2016 and had a wonderful stay. We would love to return one day when our kids are a little older. We hope that we followed all the house rules, but we could not read them as they were in Icelandic. Our kids loved the big field and the play structures where they could run and play, while we sat on the porch. It was a very quiet and peaceful location and the house had all the necessary amenities.

A charming and cosy cottage in a tranquil setting. Lovely to have views of the sea and be so close to the cliff walk. Cooking facilities are basic but the barbecue came in handy and the shower was great.

Bústaðurinn stendur í frábæru umhverfi undir jöklinum í nállægð við Hellna og Arnarstapa. Allur aðbúnaður í bústaðnum góður. Bestu þakkir fyrir ánægjulega dvöl.
