Only a half an hour drive is to the Golden Waterfalls, Gullfoss, Majestic and thunderous, the force and beauty of this two tiered waterfall will be something your camera wants to linger on. Just next to the Gullfoss is the Geysir geothermal area, home of the famous Geysir and Strokkur hot springs. The Strokkur hot spring erupts every 5 minutes or so, making it one of the most active geyser.
Also very close by is the famous Skálholt Church which was the seat of religious power in Iceland for centuries and where some of the most dramatic events in Iceland's history took place.
There is an hour drive to Seljalandsfoss waterfall where you can walk behind the waterfall to enjoy the scenery from a different view. The countryside around the waterfall is beautiful and to the north rises the magnificent Eyjafjallajökull Glacier.
You can then drive further to Skógar where you will find Skógafoss Waterall that is considered to be one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Iceland. You can then drive through Mýrdalur valley to enjoy a view of Mýrdalsjökull glacier under which lies the central volcanic system of Katla.
There is around two hour drive to Vik village where you can enjoy some fantastic sights at the black sand beach, for example the picturesque basalt column formations and the incredible Reynisdrangar Sea stacks.
You can easily make a daytrip to Vestmannaeyjar. Vestmannaeyjar, or The Westman Islands, are truly a wonder of Nature. The youngest island of the Vestmannaeyjar celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2003 and the oldest one is close to 40.000 years old! You drive the pier at Bakkafjara on the south coast and from there the ferry takes another 30 minutes to reach the islands. You can visit the puffin nesting area in Storhofdi and walk up to the crater of a volcano that erupted only a few decades ago as well as exploring the flora of the new lava field. You can also make a boat cruise where you see many of the wonders of the Vestmannaeyjar nature. Colourful ocean caves, thousands of seabirds and, occasionally during the summer, groups of whales.
