We come from the land of the ice and snow,
From the midnight sun where the hot springs flow.
That Led Zeppelin knew their stuff. Hot springs are a big deal around here. Much of Iceland’s energy comes from geothermal resources, and much of the hot water that heats the houses and keeps the power running, also creates luxurious above-ground baths just begging for a long soak.
One such hot spring is the gorgeous Reykjadalur, nearby Hveragerði. Just a 3km hike through stunning hills and valleys will land you at this gem. Take a look…
Of course, not all hot water is suitable for taking a dip, so don’t go bathing in construction run-off, don’t jump into the pots of bubbling mud you’ll see throughout the countryside (along the hike to and from Reykjadalur, included), and heed all signs and markers. Of course, if you’re one to air on the side of extreme caution, Iceland is dotted with some lovely man-made swimming pools, too.
